Subject Leader: Mr Fowler
General information about the subject
In Year 7 Design and Technology, the students learn about the three main materials used in our department: metals, woods and polymers. This learning focuses on the properties of each material group, along with understanding the tools used and gaining experience of how to manufacture each material in the school workshops.
Practically, students will gain experience in all of the material areas: woods, metals and polymers. They will learn to use the relevant tools and machinery to make the following
Metal: a metal monster figure
Woods: a wooden stand for the metal monster figure
Polymers: a layered acrylic keyring
What topics are taught?
When will they be taught?
Theoretically the students focus on from September to February or February to July as they are only taught for half of the year 7 in DT
Learning the properties of the three main material groups: woods, metals and polymers.
Understanding the tools used for each material group and some of the industrial processes used in the manufacture of these materials.
Generating design ideas using methods to create unique ideas, avoiding design fixation.
Introduction to presentation techniques and 3D drawing in oblique projection.
Developing basic rendering skills to produce realistic design drawings.
How will my son or daughter be assessed?
When do these assessments take place?
They will be assessed on their practical outcomes in the 3 material areas of woods, metals and polymers. They will also be assessed on their knowledge and understanding of these materials along with appropriate tools and processes required.
Assessments take place from September to February or February to July as they are only taught for half of the year 7 in DT
What can my son or daughter do to support their learning at home?
What materials are provided or available online?
They can learn key word definitions and core knowledge, all of which is in their DT booklet.
They have online the 3 main knowledge organisers which cover the core knowledge to access and develop their understanding of the projects undertaken within the half year of DT.
