General information about the subject
German is studied twice per week by all Year 7 students.
We teach our students through “parallel texts.” Parallel texts are perfect pieces of German writing, translated word for word in a parallel fashion into English. The German text is filled with the key vocabulary and higher-level grammatical structures of the unit.
We teach students to actively learn these texts and to adapt the key sentences with their own information.
In lessons we focus on drilling these key structures through spoken
language practise, pronunciation practise and low stakes quizzing and
Our focus on spoken language boosts confidence for all learners.
At the end of Year 7, students choose one language to specialise in.
What topics are taught?
When will they be taught?
We cover three topics in depth throughout Year 7.
“My world and I”
“Family and animals”
How will my son or daughter be assessed?
When do these assessments take place?
Students will be asked to learn vocabulary and practise “self quizzing” the vocabulary every week. There will be a vocab quiz on that week’s vocabulary every week.
Our course is taught using parallel texts and sentence builders.
At the end of each half term there will be an assessment where students will be asked to write their own piece of writing, following the pattern of the parallel text as a model.
What can my son or daughter do to support their learning at home?
What materials are provided or available online?
Every student will have access to the online Active Learn suite of programmes through a username and password, given to students by their teachers. Regular tasks will be set for students for homework, but in addition, students can use these resources themselves to strengthen and broaden their knowledge.
Students are given a physical Knowledge Book at the start of the year, which includes the key parallel texts that we will be studying, the vocabulary that will be quizzed every week as well as a variety of additional information that may be of use to students in their language learning journey.
