General information about the subject
In History our intention is for students to have understanding and knowledge of the world around them and the relevance of the past when we look at features of society today.
In Year 8 we focus on consolidating and building upon core historical skills and terminology. The content we cover at KS3 is organised chronologically. During Year 8, students will learn about more modern British History, for example Britain’s role in World
War One. They will also study key events of the 20th century in other parts of the world like the rise of Hitler and the Holocaust.
Our aim is also to educate students on how Britain has become the multicultural country it is today. This is why we look at topics such as the British Empire (with a focus on India) and migration to Britain in the 1950s-60s.
What topics are taught?
When will they be taught?
- The British Empire (with a case study on India)
- The Suffragettes
- Rise of Hitler
- The Holocaust
- WW2 Case Study: Pearl Harbour and the Atomic Bomb
- American Civil Rights
- British Civil Rights (1950-60s)
How will my son or daughter be assessed?
When do these assessments take place?
There will be regular low stakes testing in lessons. This will be based on content covered in lessons and the knowledge book. This is to help students retain knowledge and aid with their final assessment at the end of the topic.
At the end of each topic students will sit an assessment based on the content they have covered and a specific historical skill. Assessments can be knowledge retrieval questions or a longer written answer which
students are prepared for beforehand.
What can my son or daughter do to support their learning at home?
What materials are provided or available online?
Using the knowledge book to quiz students on the topic they are currently learning. They should also be self-quizzing.
Ask students to tell you about what they have learnt in History.
KS3 BBC Bitesize History also has materials to aid revision, along with videos and quizzes.
