Year 8 ICT & Computing

Subject Leader: Mr J Muldoon
General information about the subject
Pupils learn about how computers work and how networks work. This exposes them to a different aspect of Computer Science than in year 7, which is important ahead of pupils choosing their year 9 options. At the same time these topics develop pupils’ understanding of inputs, processes and outputs covered in year 7 to embed this knowledge.
What topics are taught?
When will they be taught?
Students have one lesson a week. Below are the topics covered.
Advent Term
 8.1 Cracking the Code
 8.2 Computer Systems
Lent Term
 8.3 Python Programming
8.4 Representations from Clay to Silicon
Pentecost term
 8.5 Cyber Security
 8.6 Mobile App Development
How will my son or daughter be assessed?
When do these assessments take place?
There will be regular low stakes testing in lessons either online or on paper. This will be based on content covered in lessons and their knowledge book. This is to help students retain knowledge and aid with their final assessment at the end of the topic.

At the end of each topic students will sit an assessment based on the content they have covered. These assessments can be knowledge retrieval questions or practical depending on the unit.
What can my son or daughter do to support their learning at home?
What materials are provided or available online?
Using the knowledge book to quiz students on the topic they are currently learning. They should also be self-quizzing. Be engaged in new technology and see if your child can link it to IT.

Use Google Classroom: all class resources are on there.
