Psychology - Curriculum Intent

Core Objectives

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour.

The course equips students with the theoretical knowledge, vocabulary and practical skills in scientific research to develop a better understanding of themselves and others

Key Principle 1 - Gospel Values

In studying Psychology, students develop empathy, compassion and tolerance. Students refrain from making judgements, but instead aim to understand different scenarios, situations and life events to consider how best they can help others.

In addition, students consider how to act with integrity in the face of challenging behaviours and situations.

Key Principle 2 - Powerful Knowledge

Students will:

Develop understanding of the scientific method and confidence in a range of practical, mathematical and problem-solving skills

Realise that Psychology is everywhere and can be applied to understand human and animal behaviours.

Challenge popular misconceptions about mental health and learn about causes and treatments of common disorders.

Study classic research, competing perspectives and Issues and debates in Psychology

Gain skills to improve learning in the future including how memory functions and how we build knowledge.

Take a critical stance and consider the wider economic and ethical implications of psychological research.

Key Principle 3 - Enrichment

Students will:

Read contemporary research published via the Psychologist and Psychology review

Delve further into the subject via recommended films, fiction and non- fiction reading lists

Attend revision conferences and brain awareness days

Listen to guest speakers who are experts in their field and provide pathways for ambition and excellence
